A question we sometimes get is: “I have not practiced Reiki in a long time. Do I need to get attuned again?” Or: “I haven’t used my Reiki for a while, and I can’t feel the energy. What do I do?”

The answer is simple: Reiki is a universal healing energy. Once you’ve been attuned, you do not need to be attuned again. The energy is always there, even if it changes and evolves over time.

What can fade is your sensitivity to the experience of Reiki. This doesn’t mean your attunement has worn off; it just means your awareness of the energy has become quieter through lack of practice. The good news is there are many ways to strengthen your sensitivity again.

Create a Reiki routine

Reiki responds beautifully to consistency. Even 10 to 15 minutes of Reiki self-healing most days can rekindle your sensitivity. Many teachers once suggested a 21-day cleanse after attunement, but ongoing Reiki practice is what truly sustains your connection.

Commit to regular self-healing:

Treat yourself to Reiki self-healing every day if you can, even if just for a short session. Ten or 15 minutes several times a week, over time will make a difference. Regular self-healing builds your confidence and allows your body, mind, and emotions to continuously release toxins and blockages, clears energetic clutter and raises your spiritual vibration. It also strengthens your ability to channel Reiki for others. Treat it as an act of self-care.

When practicing, don’t worry if you don’t feel strong sensations right away. Reiki always flows. Some people are naturally less sensitive to the energy, but this does not make them less effective healers. Trust that your body and spirit are receiving what they need.

Here’s a short article you might find useful: The importance of regular self-healing in Reiki practice.

Be open to receiving.

Reiki isn’t something you “do.” It flows through you when you allow yourself to become a channel. It took me a long time to let go of the urge to control, and shift from “doing” to “being.” So, maybe you are trying too hard.

As you offer Reiki to yourself or another, be open to receiving its energy and the divine love that fuels it and that openness will deepen your connection.

Trust the process.

Reiki has its own wisdom. It always goes where it is most needed, whether or not you can feel it, so trust the process rather than focusing on specific outcomes. Patience is key.

Practice with someone else.

Reiki shares and practice groups are wonderful ways to reignite your energy. Consider attending a Reiki share. Connecting with other Reiki Healers, swapping ideas, asking questions and feeling part of a community can all help.

There are lots of shares online, or perhaps someone is offering one in your locality where you can meet up face to face or you could even start one yourself.

Is there someone you can contact to set up a healing session or share Reiki with? Maybe a friend, a member of your family, or someone you trained with? Reach out and set up a time. A genuine desire to help yourself and others is a powerful catalyst for connection with Reiki.

Receive Reiki

Don’t forget that you, too, can benefit from receiving Reiki. Book a session with a practitioner, or trade with a fellow student. Allowing yourself to be nurtured in this way can reawaken your connection.

Review and refresh your training

Revisit your Reiki manual, explore Reiki meditations, and reconnect with the symbols and techniques you learned. You may also find new inspiration through books, workshops, podcasts seminars or teachers from different lineages. Reiki is a lifelong journey, not a one-time training.

Contact your Reiki Master and discuss your situation, they may have some very helpful suggestions for you. We enjoy being contacted by past students.

Don’t forget to cultivate a spiritual mindset as the original purpose of Reiki is to develop and sustain a spiritual practice and the healing is a byproduct of that.

Call on spiritual support

Whether through prayer, meditation, or inviting spiritual guides to work with you, ask for help in deepening your practice.

One of our Reiki Masters, William Rand, suggests that you: “Ask that your Reiki practice will be blessed and you will be guided to increase its strength and the benefit it provides you and those you treat. Accept there is no limit to the healing power that is available to you as it is infinite, and ask that you be blessed with an abundance of healing, loving, spiritual energy so that you will be of greater service to others.”

Be gentle with yourself

There’s no need for guilt if you’ve stepped away from your practice. Life ebbs and flows. What matters is your willingness to return now. Treat yourself with the same compassion you offer others.

Track your progress.

Keeping a short journal of your experiences can help you notice subtle shifts, insights, and patterns. Over time, you’ll see just how much your connection is growing.

Reiki never leaves you

Reiki never leaves you. It is a gift you carry for life, waiting for you to reconnect whenever you’re ready. All it asks is your willingness to practice, to be open, and to trust. By returning to self-healing, inviting support, and engaging with community, you will find your sensitivity returning and your connection deepening.

Be patient with yourself, celebrate small steps, and remember Reiki flows effortlessly when you let it. Each time you place your hands with intention, you are saying “yes” to love, healing, and connection.
