As healers, card readers, and psychics, it is essential for us to be sensitive to the thoughts and emotions of others. While this sensitivity is a gift, it can pose challenges when faced with negative energy. Therefore, practicing cleansing, grounding and protection is essential to maintain your well-being and it enhances your intuitive and healing abilities.

1. Daily Protection Rituals
Start your day with a simple protection routine. If you forget, don’t worry; just do it when you remember. With regular practice, this will take only seconds. On heavier days, renew your protection.
2. Create a bubble of protection
Envision a protective bubble of light around yourself, completely surrounding you. I use colours like gold, white, blue, or even pink to invite loving energies. You can add protective symbols like the five-pointed star or the cross to your bubble, and invite in protective figures like Christ, Archangel Michael, or Kali to enhance its strength.
You can also surround your car and your home in a protective bubble of light.
If you are in a nasty situation picture your aura as a mirror, which will reflect all negativity back towards whoever sent it. But the mirror also means no helpful psychic energy can enter your aura so only use it as emergency protection.

3. Invoke Divine Protection
Call upon Angels or Ascended Masters for protection. For instance, you can invoke Archangel Michael by saying, “Archangel Michael, Archangel Michael, Archangel Michael, thank you for surrounding me in your blue light of protection.” Feel this powerful energy enveloping you and shielding you.
I sense myself being enclosed from head to toe in a cloak of strong royal blue light and feel Archangel Michael with me. He is the warrior Angel, dressed in armour and with a sword or spear. You can ask for his shield to be placed over sensitive places for you where you need extra help – like the heart or solar plexus chakras.
You can also call upon protective Ascended Masters like Jesus or Sekhmet in the same way. Remember the Angels and Ascended Masters want to help us, but we have to ask for their help.
4. Prayer and Affirmations
Taking a few quiet moments to pray for protection can be very helpful. Just ask for what you need in the moment.
Below are some positive affirmations you can use for intuitive or healing work:
"I am divinely protected and perfectly safe."
"I only work with the highest beings of love and light."
"My Angels and Guides are always protecting me."
5. Closing Your Chakras and Aura
When we meditate, heal, give readings or do other spiritual work our chakras open wide so we can be more intuitive and sensitive. After spiritual work, it’s crucial to close your chakras to avoid absorbing unwanted energies.
It can be dangerous to be in places like bars or shopping malls when your chakras are wide open as there are lots of different energies there, and it’s best not to take any negative energy home with you. One of the problems with drugs or heavy drinking is it weakens your aura and can leave your chakras wide open for all sorts of rubbish to enter.
It is easy to close down after your spiritual work and your intention to do so is key. I ask for my aura and chakras to close to the optimum setting for what I’m about to do.
6. Releasing Negative Energy You’ve Absorbed
At a workshop I attended, UK medium Gordon Smith described healers as "psychic dustbins," meaning they can unknowingly absorb negative energies from others. Intuitive people and psychics can do this as well.
During a healing I sometimes feel discomfort in a particular part of my body. I’ve come to trust that this is a message from the client indicating an area that would benefit from healing. Once I’ve got the message I thank it and ask for the discomfort to be removed because I don’t want to take their pain or discomfort away with me.
Any time you realise you’re feeling uncomfortable or out of sorts ask that any energies that are not yours be released. This often makes an enormous difference to how you feel within a few minutes. Do it after healings and readings as well.
7. Transform Worry into Blessings
When we worry about someone or blame ourselves for their misery, we may take on some of their negative energy. Worrying about someone, unless it motivates you take effective action, doesn’t help them or you and can interfere with any healing or help you send them.
If you have given them healing or a reading, or help of any kind, surrender the outcome of that to Source. You’ve done your best but it’s up to them and God as to what the outcome will be.
Much more effective is to pray for them or bless them.
To bless someone simply ask for good things for them. For example, see them happy and smiling, ask that their finances thrive and prosper, that they have a lovely harmonious home, that their important relationships are based on love, honesty and trust and bring them much laughter, happiness, pleasure and joy. Don’t use this as a chance to ask for things that would benefit you, such as them loving you. It really is just about them.
Do it with the people you love, and those you find challenging. I can guarantee if you do this regularly it will transform your relationships. Don’t forget to bless yourself as well.
8. Cleansing Your Aura
There are many different cleansing techniques. I ones I use include:
Smudging with the smoke from a sage stick is a great way to cleanse your home, and if you like the smoke you can also smudge yourself to cleanse your aura.
Sea salt baths – salt has the ability to release toxins and negativity from your physical body and your aura. It’s one of the benefits of swimming in the sea. Sea salt is best for energy cleansing, Epsom salts is great for relaxing your muscles. Dissolve a cup of either salt to your bath and soak for 20 to 30 minutes, relaxing completely. Imagine the water and salt pulling all the bad energy out of your body and aura. Afterwards wash the salt off in a shower.
Reiki – if you’re Reiki trained, self-healing also clears, repairs and strengthens your aura, and can strengthen your intuitive powers.
Each of these three techniques is also a great way to prepare for giving a reading or healing.
9. Use Protective Crystals
Some crystals can shield against negative energy. The three below are also very grounding and you feel guided to carry one with you.
Black Tourmaline: Blocks negativity.
Hematite: Protects and balances your auric field and is helpful for those who feel and are unbalanced by other people’s energy.
Obsidian: Releases negative thoughts and energy.
10. Grounding Techniques
Grounding helps you stay centred and protected, especially after healing or intuitive work and stops you feeling spacey, or restless. For more information see my earlier blog on grounding.
Conclusion
Embrace your healing and psychic gifts but remember to protect yourself from negative energies. Establishing routines for cleansing, grounding, and asking for divine support will enhance your practice and wellbeing.
The best book I’ve found on these issues is Psychic Protection by William Bloom.
If you want to learn more about blessing there’s a wonderful book calledThe gentle art of blessingby Pierre Pradervand.
